Students to get creative with a white wall

Tech Valley High School students are building on the lyrics from Cream's famous 1960s rock anthem to teach creativity along with English and geometric terms.

Freshmen in SPLIT class (a combination English and geometry class) recently painted a wall white and will place upon it designs and words related to projects throughout the remainder of the year.

"The word wall is a continuously growing collection of concept and content words that relate to the project work students do in SPLIT. In each project, students are introduced to approximately 30 new geometry- or English-specific words. Additionally, they learn six to 10 new general concept vocabulary words," said teacher Mary VanHoomissen. "Making these words continuously visible to students and embedding regular cognitive activities wherein students manipulate the words will hopefully increase the depth of understanding about geometry and the relationships between geometric concepts."

Students will design the background and the structure for each word before it is added to the white wall, VanHoomissen added.
